President George Weah plays for Liberia in Nigeria friendly

Liberia President and former Ballon d'Or victor George Weah made a surprise return to global football at the age of 51.

George Weah played 79 minutes in his team's loss.

One of the football analysts with tweeter handle (@biolakazeem) argued that as far as the friendly was concerned, the Liberia President reduced what would have otherwise been another meaningful competitive game to a farce.

"Some. wondered why Coach Gernot Rohr did not include President Buhari in his squad since his Liberian counterpart, Weah was on the pitch". He represented his country 60 times and played for some of the biggest clubs in Europe.

Weah, who scored a landslide victory in presidential elections last December, is the only African footballer to win the world and European awards.

The father/son duo both took the field on the same day, with Timothy Weah starting and playing 89 minutes in the USMNT's 1-0 win over 10-man Mexico.

Weah, 51, featured briefly for Lone Star in the encounter, and his every touch on the ball was hailed with loud roar from the fans.

The last time Liberia and Nigeria played, at senior level, was in 2001 during the Federation Internationale de Football Association 2002 World Cup qualifier.

Stoke midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo and Leicester duo Wilfried Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho, who all featured at this summer's World Cup in Russian Federation, played a part in the fixture as the Super Eagles looked set for a routine victory at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium.
