Clean sheet for Hart but Saints ride their luck

Clean sheet for Hart but Saints ride their luck

I mentioned before the window that we want people who are battling to play, not those where there are big gaps and some who are more starters than others.

Saints manager Hughes hailed Liverpool loanee Ings for delivering a creative debut in Sunday's season-opening goalless draw with Burnley.

Southampton improved as the game went on and created enough opportunities to believe they could have started the season with a win.

However, as ever, Sean Dyche's side were organised and tough to break down - they totally limited the amount of involvement that Ryan Bertrand and Cedric Soares had as wing-backs and as a result Mark Hughes switched his side to a more generic 4-4-2 just before the hour.

"I am not rigid that I stick one formation or one way of playing", Hughes said.

The pick of his saves was denying former England worldwide Aaron Lennon from point-blank range, before he got down well to save Ireland global Jeff Hendrick's header at the end of the first half.

Burnley dominated the first half and thought they had gone ahead in the eighth minute when former Southampton midfielder Jack Cork side-footed home, but the effort was ruled to have been offside.

Engel think it provides a snapshot of a pollination process that may be much older, possibly dating to the Triassic Period. After cutting, trimming, and polishing the specimen to get a better look under a microscope, his excitement only grew.

"I was pleased with his performance and I saw him walking around in the dressing room and he looks fine", explained the Saints boss.

Hughes said: "You have seen glimpses of what he will bring us".

Mark Hughes's side were certainly more durable here than they had been for so much of last year's sorry campaign, and by the end they even showed some genuine attacking intent as they sought a victor against a typically obdurate Burnley.

"We know the experience he's got, I still think he's a keeper who's got more, he's coming into his prime".

- Burnley have drawn on the opening weekend of a Premier League season for the very first time, after losing three and winning one of their first four such matches.

Hughes changed Southampton's tactical set-up from his predecessor, mainly switching to a predominantly more defensive shape with a trio of centre-backs to make it more hard for the opposition to force their way through the Saints' back line. He kept his mentality and focus and, when called upon, he produced a mature performance.
