Strong feelings about President Donald Trump, a competitive governor's race and congressional retirements fueled what probably was a record MI primary turnout, with more than half-million more people voting than in 2010 - the last time the governorship was open.

Mr. Shapiro said he was "excited" that Ms. Ocasio-Cortez, who won her primary in NY for a House seat, has been framed as the future of the Democratic Party.

And she touted her experience during her victory speech in Detroit. And, she added, "We come from a family and a place that had been colonized".

"I mean, if she were to get into a discussion with somebody who asks her tough questions, I don't think she has the information or the philosophy at her disposal to actually answer those questions well", Shapiro said. Patrick Colbeck and Dr. Jim Hines, an obstetrician-gynecologist.

"I love MI. I am raising my family here in this great state", she said.
