Jose Mourinho aims early dig at 'serial winners' Liverpool and Tottenham

Having signed Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant, the Portuguese hoped to bring in two more players but would have been satisfied with just one.

Although there has been speculation about a deal for Tottenham's Toby Alderweireld, there has been no offer from United while Leicester remain determined to retain England global Harry Maguire, who has four years left on his contract.

"I am still expecting them to be very strong this season, and I actually think that, along with Liverpool, they will be a lot closer to Manchester City this time".

"The reason why I want to tip Liverpool is that they're moving in the right direction", he said.

Mourinho was speaking at a 9am press conference and his words did not equivocally rule out the possibility of something happening.

Liverpool will end their 28-year wait for a Premier League title by dethroning Manchester City this season, according to Ian Wright.

He was also, however, firm in his stance that his old club Manchester United "should be challenging" regardless of their inability to add a top quality centre back to their side during the transfer window.

Djokovic faded late against his flashy opponent, who played with poise and power on a warm, breezy afternoon at Aviva Centre. Anderson topped qualifier Ilya Ivashka of Belarus 7-5, 6-3, and Dimitrov beat American Frances Tiafoe 7-6 (1), 3-6, 7-6 (4).

"I told that during pre-season it looked like I was saying something absolutely out of order, something insane, I repeat and maybe tomorrow the reaction is the same: Pre-season hard when you don't have your players to work, that's as simple as that".

Former Liverpool FC defender Thompson believes the Reds will finish second in the title race unless Manchester City lose their ability to score late goals.

"I think it'll be tough but if they were to go of the Champions league and they had free weeks after Christmas, Saturday to Saturday they could be a real threat this season to City".

"They returned on Monday, trained Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and today so you can imagine they are not really fit and ready but we have needs", Mourinho said. Mahrez bolsters City´s already impressive array of attacking talent and, while Guardiola missed out on Italy midfielder Jorginho, who instead joined Chelsea, the champions´ combination of youthful swagger and world-class talent still makes them favourites to reign supreme again at the end of the season.

Marcus Rashford, Phil Jones, Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku made slightly early returns so could be involved on Friday, perhaps helping to boost the mood of a manager who has looked downbeat for much of the summer. In football you need time to work and players on the pitch to work and we didn't have that until now. I was told that during pre-season it looked like I was saying something absolutely out of order, something insane.
