First 2 human cases of West Nile identified

There have been five reported human West Nile virus cases in the province, two of which were travel related.

Both tested positive for the West Nile infection.

"The two pools, or two trap sites that were positive, were found within the City of Kitchener, but really what it means is that conditions are right anywhere across the region", Miller said.

This year, West Nile has not yet been found in a Wisconsin resident.

The cases, mostly in the western suburbs of Athens, mark a reappearance of the virus after an outbreak a year ago when Greek authorities registered 48 cases, resulting in five deaths. Less than one per cent develop more serious central nervous system issues, she said.

In the CDC's most recent update on July 24, the agency stated that 39 people had been infected with the virus, although Iowa health officials said the woman who died was not included in the report.

The virus can cause symptoms similar to those of the flu, but in extreme cases, it can result in tremors, fever, comas and a lethal swelling of the brain tissue known as encephalitis.

According to the state Department of Public Health, the patients were residents of Fairfield and Newington.

The health department suggests using DEET and other repellents, wearing long sleeves and trousers and avoiding being outside between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
