Firenado! Swirling finger of flame rises from blaze at factory

A video recorded by firefighters and posted to Twitter by Leicestershire's fire department captured the event, showing a slim streak of fire reaching into the sky amid a visible whirlwind storm that resembled a twister.

East Midlands Ambulance Service attended but no injuries were reported.

Ten fire engines from three stations tackled the blaze, which involved approximately 100 meters x 100 meters of stacked plastic pallets.

At about 15:00 on Tuesday, firefighters started damping down the fire and appliances began to leave.

The fire whirl had also spread to a small site building and a number of fork lift trucks at the property, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said.

Nearby residents were told to keep their windows closed after 60ft-high flames sent thick black smoke skyward, creating plumes that could be seen up to 26 miles away in Nottingham.

This particular "firenado" happened when a plastics factory - which makes bread trays for the whole of the United Kingdom - went up in smoke in Derbyshire near Manchester.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service, who were assisting local crews in Derbyshire, shared the stunning video on Facebook.
