Diego Godin subject of approach from Red Devils

United boss Jose Mourinho is desperately scouring the market for a top class centre-back during the final hours of the window and has so far been frustrated in his attempts to sign the likes of Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld and Jerome Boateng in recent weeks.

He has spent the last 11 years of his career in Spain, switching from Villarreal to Atletico in 2010, and has won seven major trophies with the Colchoneros including the 2014 La Liga title.

However, like the rest of their defensive targets, the Uruguay worldwide has proven to be out of reach.

In his press conference ahead of Friday's season opener against Leicester City, the Portuguese did not sound optimistic about his club's chances of signing anyone before the transfer window slams shut.

He said: "A bit more on that Manchester United move for Diego Godin".

Whether United get a deal over the line for Godin, though, remains to be seen.

On Friday, it was announced that Hamas had agreed to a long-term ceasefire deal with Israel, as proposed by Egypt. Hamas and other resistance groups have linked their fate to Israel freeing Palestinian security detainees.

"Those suspicions were confirmed once talks started". It has now been revealed by the Sky Sports reporter, Gianluca di Marzio, that the Red Devils were ready to pay the Uruguayan's release clause of €25m.

A leader and tough uncompromising defender, he is a player Mourinho has coveted for some time and is a key component to Atletico where he has a strong relationship with coach Simeone and that relationship has led to a deadline day rejection.

"It's my information United made an offer for the agent to take to the Atletico board".

On Thursday morning, several reports claimed that United had contacted Atletico in the hopes of adding Godin to their squad before the 5pm deadline.

"We should make it clear here, Mourinho would have been keen to sign Godin".
