Samsung 4TB QLC SSDs enter mass production - Storage

This is all thanks to the more efficient production of 4-bit QLC NAND flash memory, while retaining the same performance level as a 3-bit SSD according to Samsung. If so, here's some good news from Samsung. That charge is used to read information from a sensor, so it's much more hard to maintain performance over time. It achieves this by using a 3-bit SSD controller and TurboWrite technology.

"As we expand our lineup across consumer segments and to the enterprise, 4-bit terabyte-SSD products will rapidly spread throughout the entire market", Han said.

Created to increase the capacity available from each NAND chip, QLC is a form of multi-level cell technology which allows four individual bits per memory cell - vastly increasing capacity over the company's existing triple-level cell (TLC) equivalent.

For the hardcore techies: the 4TB 2.5-inch SATA-based SSDs read and write data at 540 MB/s and 520 MB/s, respectively. And although Samsung didn't share any pricing information for the new SSDs, the language in the press release makes it clear that these are aimed at consumers (and thus will be more affordable). Probably not, yet. Price could be the spark that sets off the storage revolution, but at the moment Samsung isn't giving that vital piece of info away.

There are also plans to produce QLC drives in 1TB and 2TB capacities and NVMe drives down the line, with fifth generation QLC V-NAND following on shortly after.

Samsung boasts that its QLC SSDs will improve efficiency for consumer computing, including in smartphone storage where the 1TB four-bit V-NAND chip will allow it to efficiently churn out 128GB memory cards for smartphones. New M.2 SSDs with the QLC technology are also in the works, but these will first come to enterprise applications around the end of the year.
