Rand Paul: Russian delegation to visit Capitol Hill

"I think this is incredibly important", the U.S. lawmaker was quoted as saying in translated comments by Interfax news agency.

Sen. Rand Paul on Monday invited Russian lawmakers to Washington after meeting Russian members of parliament in Moscow.

USA intelligence agencies say Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 US presidential election to try to tilt the race in Trump's favor, an assertion Moscow rejects, and the two countries are also at odds over Syria and Ukraine. "All the Democrats are now happy that new sanctions are being introduced", Paul was quoted as saying by the RIA news agency.

Kosachev said that while no plans have been finalized, "certain specific subjects in the development of this co-operation" had been addressed during Paul's visit, adding that he hoped a meeting between the Senate and the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs could be held before the end of the year.

Paul is a key supporter of Trump's controversial interactions with Putin, heralding the leaders' Helsinki summit last month as exactly the sort of action Washington should be taking to mend ties between the two. "Certainly it will not happen during the ongoing election campaign either", he said.

A bipartisan group of senators introduced legislation last week to impose "crushing sanctions" on Russian Federation for interfering in USA elections, amid warnings that November's midterm elections may be targeted.

Elon Musk indicates taking Tesla private as he posts 'funding secured' tweet
Tesla has been publicly traded since 2010, and has seen its share price rise from just under $20 then to $360 at time of writing. But Musk seemed to relish the tumult. "Good morning", he tweeted less than an hour later, adding a smiling emoji.

"There was no meddling in 2016".

Paul was expected to meet Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov during his visit.

"We had general discussions about a lot of issues", Paul responded.

It added that "special attention was given to the possibility of developing inter-parliamentary contacts".

Marking the second U.S. congressional delegation to Moscow in a month - Senator Richard Shelby and a group of United States lawmakers held talks with senior Russian officials in July - Paul said that part of the objective of his trip was to promote greater dialogue between Moscow and Washington.
