Oscars Creating 'Popular Film' Category In Academy Awards Reform

Oscars Creating 'Popular Film' Category In Academy Awards Reform

It is not known which will be cut, nor what he eligibility criteria for the new popular film award will be. The 2019 show will still run on Sunday, Feb. 24.

Bailey is beginning his second term as president and his fifteenth year as a governor representing the Cinematographers Branch.

This is especially interesting as the Marvel Cinematic Universe has never won an Oscar - embarrassingly, despite Suicide Squad grabbing a Best Makeup and Hairstyling gong a year ago - but that could very well change with this new award category.

Many have taken to social media to criticize Academy members' Wednesday decision to add the new bracket, which some view as an excuse not to nominate critically acclaimed blockbusters like "Black Panther" for best picture.

Does that mean even less Academy recognition for similar films now that they may have a separate category?

Last night, the Board of Governors met to elect new board officers, and discuss and approve significant changes to the Oscars telecast.

-And starting in 2020, the telecast will move up to an earlier date, most likely to the chagrin of The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, shifting from February 23rd to Sunday, February 9, 2020.

The best meteor shower in years is happening August 11-13
If you take a peek next Friday or Saturday nights, you'll likely still see 80 or more meteors per hour. No special equipment is needed to enjoy this nighttime spectacle, just a dark sky and some patience.

In order to fit in all 24 award categories, some will be presented during commercial breaks with the winning moments edited and aired later in the broadcast. The date change will not affect awards eligibility dates or the voting process.

We are excited about these steps, and look forward to sharing more details with you. Many wrote that they hoped the category will be about stunt work.

Others blasted the academy with insults, calling the new changes "inane" and those who made them "cowards", while "Lord of the Rings" veteran Elijah Wood simply tweeted, "Best Popular Film? oof".
