Indonesian woman held captive in cave for 15 years, police say

An Indonesian shaman has been arrested for keeping an abducted teenager as a sex slave for 15 years by claiming he was possessed by the spirit of her imaginary boyfriend, police said Wednesday.

Tolitoli police rescued the woman, who was only identified as HS, and who was trapped in a crevice between large rocks near Galumpang village, the Jakarta Post reported.

Police identified the woman in a rocky jungle chasm near the village where she had been held since her disappearance in 2003. She had reportedly been kept in a hut near the shaman's home since she disappeared in 2003.

"She was led to believe that Amrin's spirit had entered (the elderly man's) body", Iqbal said at a news conference Tuesday.

"She looked confused when she was found and at times said she wanted to return to the cave", district police chief Muhammad Iqbal Alquddusy said. "It is obvious that he was satisfying his lust".

Jago also reportedly told her the jin was guarding the hole where she was hidden to stop her from leaving.

The self-styled shaman, nicknamed Jago, took the woman captive when she was 13 and forced her to have sex repeatedly with him by telling her that she was possessed by a genie, Alquddusy said.

Police rescued the woman, who is now at a safe house, after receiving a tip-off from a family member. According to the Jakarta Post, the sister was married to the son of the shaman, known for his traditional healing methods and abilities to channel spirits.

The man, he said, admitted to sexual relations since 2008.

An 83-year-old village shaman from a village in central Sulawesi has been charged under sex abuse and child protection laws.

The shaman faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted of coercing a minor into intercourse and may face other charges, as well.
