Other devices that are named alongside the Apple Watch include fitness trackers made by companies such as Fitbit and wireless speakers from Sonos.

Companies can still ask the CBP agency to get their products off the list during the public comment period, apply for an exemption once tariffs are in effect or push for their products to be classified under a different code not included on the list.

All three companies declined to comment on the proposed tariff list.

United States border authorities have in the past ruled that certain products-including the original Apple Watch, Fitbit health trackers, and Sonos speakers-are classified under that very same subheading.

Gadgets like Apple Watches, Fitbit activity trackers and Sonos speakers could be impacted by $200 billion list of USA tariffs on goods made in China, government rulings show. Word is that Apple CEO Tim Cook has been assured by members of the current administration that the iPhone will be exempt from the new tariffs, despite logically falling in the tariff category of "data transmission machines".

"The way the president has been using his trade authority, you have direct examples of him using his authority to target specific products and companies", said Sage Chandler, vice president for worldwide trade policy at the Consumer Technology Association. Sonos and Fitbit do not break out individual product sales, but collectively they had US$2.6 billion in revenue previous year. Fitbit and Sonos alone made $2.6 billion in combined revenue a year ago.

The $200bn list of tariffs could see the original Apple Watch face a 10pc tariff under an obscure tax code as part of a growing trade war.

The tariffs are under consultation, but could go.
