Alisson capture furthers case for FPL investment in Liverpool defence

Liverpool completed its signing of goalkeeper Alisson Becker on Thursday, the team announced.

The fee beats the previous record for a goalkeeper of 53 million euros paid by Juventus for Gianluigi Buffon in 2001 and the 40 million euros Manchester City forked out to sign Alisson's compatriot Ederson from Benfica a year ago. The 2015 season saw Alisson finally establish himself in the starting XI (keeping 15 clean sheets in 26 league appearances) and indeed make his worldwide bow with Brazil in a World Cup qualification match against Venezuela.

And three-time World Cup victor Pele is also hoping Alisson can thrive at Anfield, as the 77-year-old sent a message to his compatriot on Twitter.

Jurgen Klopp was hellbent on recruiting a new stopper following Loris Karius' miserable outing in last season's Champions League final.

Alisson broke the world record transfer fee for a goalkeeper after completing his move to the Premier League side for £65m. The previous record was held by the Gianluigi Buffon's €53 million paid by Juventus to go to Parma.

There was a world-class goalkeeper on the market, and the club gave us the opportunity to sign him.

We have three outstanding goalkeepers and two very young and very talented goalkeepers but we need that, so I'm happy about that.

Speaking to Liverpool FC's website, Alisson said: "As I said previously, Liverpool are a team with a habit of winning, that have fanatical fans that are behind the team in every game". Just 25, Alisson has only played one full season as a No 1 in Europe so has tremendous scope for improvement. Further statistics reveal that he also made 46 saves in the Champions League last term, a mark that ranks as the best in the competition, while those suffering from Karius-related anxiety can relax in the knowledge that in 61 games in all competitions, their new man's tally in the "errors leading to goals" column stood at zero.

"It shows the value of goalkeepers, of course, in this moment".

On whether or not he cut his holiday short, the Brazilian said: "Yes, I did cut them short a bit but I was immensely satisfied to do so, to make this dream come true and take the next step in my career". The £67m outlay for Alisson has nearly doubled the previous record set by Ederson's move last summer. "We've had talks over the last few days and that's good".
