Trump denies USA opposition to World Health Organization breastfeeding resolution

"With respect to news published in the United States on this date, the Public Ministry reiterates that Ecuador maintains its public policy of promoting and protecting breastfeeding without variation as the exclusive food for newborns up to 6 months", a statement by the Ecuadorean health ministry said Monday reacting to the report and denying backing off from the resolution under US pressure.

Russian Federation sponsored a compromised version of it after two days of negotiation. In 2016, a proposal was discussed that would extend bans on marketing formulas and other supplemental nutrition. Millions of infants have safely consumed formula for decades. A State Department official told NPR that "media reports suggesting the United States threatened a partner nation related to a World Health Assembly resolution are false". Milk from a mother to a child is also nutritionally specific.

What WHO and UNICEF should do now, after decades of modestly successful efforts to curb the unsafe use of baby formula, is to push for a global treaty: a Framework Convention on Formula Control modeled on WHO's successful Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). This makes formula particularly problematic for poor mothers, who may not be able to buy sufficient amounts of the product, and end up watering it down or feeding the child smaller quantities, which then leads to malnourishment. Although they know it's a lie, they claim their product is more healthful than breast milk from the mother.

This is not an atypical approach for some anti-formula activists. That's great for mothers, and bad for manufacturers of baby formula.

Vegan actress/activist Pamela Anderson recently penned a letter to the World Health Organization (WHO) on behalf of animal-rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

I wouldn't want to spend it with anybody else. "She could never wish ill on him and only wishes the best for him and Hailey ". Maybe we should ask Mavis. "Over the years, Selena and Justin were on and off - but so were Hailey and Justin ".

So why was the United States so reluctant to ratify a UN resolution on promoting breastfeeding worldwide and limiting advertisements for baby formula? The U.S. also unsuccessful lobbied to stop a World Health Organization initiative to give life-saving medicine to poor countries, siding with the pharmaceutical industry's intellectual property concerns.

Representatives from Nestlé, Abbott, Mead Johnson and Wyeth (now owned by Nestlé) were described as a constant presence in hospitals in the Philippines, where only 34% of mothers exclusively breastfeed in the first six months.

Ecuador had planned to introduce the bill, but according to the newspaper, backed out after they were threatened with punishing trade measures and the withdrawal of United States military aid.

The Department of Health and Human Services, which tried to change the wording of the resolution, denies that it was involved in making threats against Ecuador.

"The resolution as originally drafted placed unnecessary hurdles for mothers seeking to provide nutrition to their children", the spokesperson said.
