Safety alerts are normally issued to foreign citizens by their embassies in times of political instability, terrorism, and natural disasters; but the USA embassy in London has had to issue a "demonstration alert" on Tuesday ahead of planned protests for July 12 to 14.

He will largely be avoiding London, where a mass demonstration is planned and where the "Trump Baby" balloon will be flown above Westminster.

Protests are expected against Trump, whose policies - including a travel ban on a number of predominantly Muslim countries, detention of child migrants on the US-Mexico border and imposition of tariffs on European Union steel and aluminium exports - have all been criticised by the UK. "With a lot of resignations", Trump told a news conference at the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels.

The protesters will gather here ahead of the visit by President Trump. "It's really kind of irrelevant to what we're trying to do, and doesn't express the opinion of the British people that I've met", he told the BBC's Today programme.

On terrorism: After coming under fire for re-tweeting anti-Muslim videos posted online by the deputy leader of the far-right Britain First group, Jayda Fransen, the president said Theresa May should focus on "destructive radical Islamic terrorism" in the United Kingdom, rather than on him.

"This week we have an opportunity to deepen this unique trading relationship and begin discussions about how we will forge a strengthened, ambitious and future-proof trade partnership. Everywhere he goes there are protests, so I don't think it really makes a big impression on him".

Mr Trump arrives Thursday afternoon following a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels and largely avoids the capital's centre and the protesters.

They reached the World Cup semi-final for the first time since Italia 90. England take on Croatia in the World Cup this evening.

On the NHS: Trump said it was "going broke and not working".

"Boris Johnson's a friend of mine, he's been very nice to me, very supportive and maybe I'll speak to him when I get over there".

A campaign is also underway to get "American Idiot", a 2004 song by the United States punk rock band Green Day, to the top of the UK Singles Chart.

The couple will attend a dinner, hosted by Mrs May, at Blenheim Palace - the ancestral home of Sir Winston Churchill - on Thursday evening.

Nearly all of Trump's activities will be outside the city: He'll meet the Queen at Windsor Castle, not Buckingham Palace.

The two leaders will hold talks the following day at Chequers, the 16th-century manor house which is the prime minister's official country residence.

The first couple departed Tuesday for a trip to Europe, where the president is expected to visit the United Kingdom, attend the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels, and meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki. These will focus on relations with Russian Federation, trade, Brexit and the Middle East.
