Cancer victim's widower stunned by 'breach' letter from PayPal

After her passing, Durdle closed out her finances - which included notifying PayPal of her death three weeks ago, and sending the company a copy of her death certificate, her will and his identification.

PayPal has never had a reputation for being a particularly upstanding organization to deal with, but its latest public misstep shows that there is nothing in this life or the next that can stop the company from tracking you down and wresting back your eBay profits from your cold, dead hands - and in this case, that's not a metaphor.

PayPal immediately apologized for the gaffe and said it's treating the situation as a "priority" as it figures out what happened.

Lindsay Durdle - the woman who received the message - died on May 31 aged 37.

But Mr Durdle became distressed as he read the letter headed: 'Important: You should read this notice carefully'. In addition, a demand of immediate repayment of the outstanding balance that amounts to £3,240.72 ($4,294.05) has been made as well.

We are not required to give any further notice before taking such action, however we do understand that you may be experiencing financial difficulties and are eager to help.
Moreover, the breach is said to be "not capable of remedy", with a warning of further actions that can be undertaken against the deceased woman, including termination of her agreement and legal proceedings against her.

It has apologised to Ms Durdle's widower, Howard, and is now investigating how the letter was sent.

According to the BBC, Paypal staff told Durdle that this was not supposed to happen, that it was either the result of a bug, bad template, or human error, and written off the debt in the meantime.

He also added that the online payment service had assured him that the matter would be addressed, however it would not be able to share the information with him because it was an "internal matter".

A spokesman for PayPal said: 'We apologise unreservedly to Mr Durdle for the understandable distress this letter has caused.

"I'm in a reasonable place at the moment - I've got quite a level head on my shoulders - and am quite capable of dealing with paperwork like this", he said.

"I'm a member of the charity Widowed and Young, and I've seen first-hand in there how a letter like this or something like it can completely derail somebody", Durdle told the BBC.
