US PGA Championship to move from August to May in tour revamp

Behind the tighter schedule was a desire for the tour to complete its season at the Tour Championship before the start of college football and the NFL.

The FedExCup Playoffs will move from four events to three next year, featuring the Northern Trust, the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship.

So basically, there will be a designated hole at 30 PGA Tour events and 28 LPGA tournaments that count toward the challenge, a similar setup to the Kodak Challenge, which existed on the PGA Tour from 2009 to 2011.

In both June and July of next year, one new tournament will make its debut on the PGA Tour schedule. The 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities replaces a Champions Tour event held at the venue, and the Rocket Mortgage Classic takes the place of the Quicken Loans National, meaning Tiger Woods is losing one of the events that benefits his foundation. The Houston Open and A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier are moving to the fall and will be played next as part of the 2019-20 schedule.

Attention tour pros looking for a fat bonus next season: The PGA Tour and LPGA have announced a new $1 million prize. TPC Boston will remain part of the FedExCup Playoffs, rotating with greater New York City every other year as the host of The Northern Trust, beginning in 2020. The move was originally announced previous year.

Starbucks is done with plastic straws
That's when Seattle's ban on restaurants providing plastic straws went into effect, part of an effort to protect ocean wildlife. Replacing the item is an innovative new lid design by Starbucks' Global Research & Development engineer Emily Alexander.

"It's been our stated objective for several years to create better sequencing of our tournaments that golf fans around the world can engage in from start to finish", said PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan.

Meanwhile, The Players Championship, which once occupied the month of May, will be played March 11-17, 2019.

Still to be determined is whether the PGA Tour will change the structure for the FedEx Cup, and how this new schedule will work in 2020 when the Olympics are in Japan from July 24 to August 9.

Valspar is followed by the WGC-Dell Match Play Championship and the Valero Texas Open, which precedes the Masters.

It means the Open Championship - which will continue to be held in July - will become the last major in the calendar.
