United States fires next shot in China trade war

A large number of Americans are uncomfortable with pre-Trump administration trade policies and believe that the U.S.is "giving more than we're getting", according to Republican pollster Conor Maguire.

The list of goods affected by the new tariffs includes seafood, fruits and vegetables, grains and tobacco.

The U.S.is pursuing a new set of tariffs that would hit $200 billion in Chinese goods, according to senior administration officials. "Unfortunately, China has not changed its behavior - behavior that puts the future of the USA economy at risk". Until January 2017, Ivanka's products were made in factories based in China and Hong Kong; around the time of Trump's inauguration, they appeared to make a well-timed exit and moved to other foreign factories, such as those in Indonesia, Vietnam, and South Korea. Trump then promised tariffs on about 1,300 Chinese products.

A ship carrying US soybeans took off for China last week just before the Asian country's retaliatory tariffs went into effect.

In addition, the U.S.is considering separate duties on a further US$16 billion in Chinese goods, after a public hearing later this month.

A business group says European companies that export from China are changing the global flow of their goods to avoid higher American tariffs in a sign of the spreading impact of the U.S. But Trump hasn't backed down, arguing that China's unfair trading practices are hurting American workers.
