Liverpool confident of signing Xherdan Shaqiri from Stoke City

Liverpool are confident that they will sign Swiss global Xherdan Shaqiri this summer, according to a report in The Guardian.

There is a release clause in his contract - understood to be around £13m - and Liverpool are discussing the details on that with the club.

The diminutive winger enjoyed a mixed World Cup; one that was peppered with moments of footballing brilliance and political controversy as Switzerland reached the last sixteen of the tournament, eventually losing out to Sweden.

"Of course, I would like to play on the biggest stage in football". Liverpool got lucky last season in that their front three - Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mo Salah - remained fit and healthy for the majority of the campaign, but their lack of depth was exposed during the Champions League final, when Salah departed injured.

European Council president warns Trump about lack of U.S. allies
Last month, the president even wrote letters to a handful of European countries, urging them to up their defense commitments. In a second tweet , the president wrote: "NATO countries must pay MORE, the United States must pay LESS".

Shaqiri's career makes for impressive reading despite the recent relegation with Stoke, with stints at Bayern Munich and Inter Milan displaying the huge potential the 5'7 winger possessed earlier in his playing days.

Now, Pearce writes that talks have been opened with Stoke as Liverpool look to capitalise on the Potters being relegated last season.

They could have him in place to travel to the USA where they will play Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City and Manchester United later this month. Before the World Cup, it was revealed that his ridiculously cheap release clause was attracting interest from several Premier League clubs with Liverpool said to be interested.
