The reigning champion completely blew Adrian Mannarino away, claiming the first set 6-0 in a blistering 16 minutes, dropping just five points in the process.

"It was great to win that first set so quickly", Federer told the BBC.

"Not really", said Federer, the No. 1 seed. "I'm telling myself, 'Why didn't I break the first game of the second?'"

Federer was followed by Serena Williams, she of the seven Wimbledon trophies among her 23 majors, who was hardly challenged in a 6-2, 6-2 win against 120th-ranked qualifier Evgeniya Rodina of Russian Federation.

Roger Federer beat Adrian Mannarino on Monday to progress to his 16th quarter-final at SW19. Along with his 44 winners (to Mannarino's 18), all are hallmarks of a player in full command.

Should a date with Centre Court come next, the nerves will remain, but Anderson will be comforted having played on it before in 2014, when he lost to Andy Murray in the fourth round. "I knew he was much better than that first set and he showed that". What a difference from a week ago, when Federer's debut of new duds after splitting from Nike drew so many headlines.

On the fifth anniversary of Andy Murray's breakthrough win on Centre Court, the player he outlasted in three sets of nearly unbearable tension that sunny Sunday, Novak Djokovic, beat the Scot's stand-in as standard bearer for the hosts, Kyle Edmund, in four rather more ragged sets on Saturday. The Argentine, who leads the stubborn baseliner 4-3 in previous encounters, levelled on his second break point and it went to 5-5, but Simon broke again to take the first set off Del Potro in the tournament so far.

"I think", Federer said when it was over, "I can be very pleased".

Former Wimbledon finalist Angelique Kerber stepped up her bid to return to the title match with a 6-3, 7-6 (7/5) win against Switzerland's Belinda Bencic.

Top seed Federer, 36, has now won 32 consecutive sets at Wimbledon, just two behind his record set from the third round in 2005 to his title triumph in 2006. "I'm definitely going to have to bring that on Wednesday". It forced him to work a bit harder to break serve and create opportunities to close the match with an efficiency that should serve him well in future rounds.

Nadal and Djokovic could face off in the semi-finals, while Federer is aiming to get out of the top half of the draw to reach a 12th final at the All England Club.

The second seed defeated Jiri Vesely 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 on Centre Court. Del Potro was leading 7-6 (7/1), 7-6 (7/5), 5-7 when his tie with Simon was halted for the night due to darkness.

Wednesday's other quarter-final sees 2016 runner-up Milos Raonic tackle U.S. ninth seed John Isner, making his Wimbledon last-eight debut at 33. His only other quarterfinals appearance was at the 2011 US Open.
