Jeremy Hunt replaces Boris Johnson amid Brexit turmoil

Late on Sunday evening, Brexit secretary David Davis handed in his resignation.

"This is a time when the world is looking at us as a country, wondering what type of country we are going to be in a post-Brexit world".

Mr Hunt takes over from Boris Johnson, who made his shock resignation announcement this afternoon.

In other Cabinet reshuffles, Jeremy Wright has been appointed culture secretary, and the new attorney general will be Geoffrey Cox. After Johnson's departure she said she was "sorry and a little surprised" at his decision after ministers appeared to back her proposals.

The prime minister earlier faced down backbench critics at a meeting of the 1922 committee, amid rumours they were close to getting the 48 signatures needed to trigger a no-confidence vote that could have removed her as prime minister.

William Dunlop Killed in Skerries Crash
Irish road racing star William Dunlop has been killed in a crash during practice for the Skerries 100 Race. He revealed he withdrew from this year's Isle of Man TT races after receiving bad news about the pregnancy.

Mr Hunt moves to the Foreign Office from the Department of Health and Social Care after having secured a £20 billion-a-year funding increase for the NHS. See PA story POLITICS Brexit.

It comes hours after Johnson resigned, writing in an open letter to Prime Minister Theresa May that the "Brexit dream is dying", as he said negotiations were being "suffocated by needless self-doubt".

He said: "Boris Johnson".

Brexit minister Steve Baker also left the Government, while Chris Green quit his position as an unpaid parliamentary aide at the Department for Transport.
