Suspected Israeli airstrike hits Syrian air base

According to state-run SANA, "Syrian air forces intercepted an Israeli aggression and downed a number of missiles which were targeting T-4 airport in Homs".

Syria on Sunday accused Israel of targeting an air base in the central Homs province known to be operated by Iranian forces, claiming that its air defenses were activated in response to the attack and hit an Israeli jet.

Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the United Kingdom -based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told the agency that "Iranian and pro-regime fighters" were killed at the base.

Israel has not acknowledged the incident, and says they do not respond to reports that emerged from foreign media.

Attacks on the T-4 based mark a new phase in Israel's defense against Iranian provocation, which has included in the past sending an armed drone into Israeli airspace.

The channel, quoting an unidentified military official, said the attack targeted the T4 air base with six missiles. Reports later surfaced that advanced Iranian Air defenses had been the target of the strike.

The city made an exception for straws and utensils , since alternatives to plastic were hard to come by at the time . Though compostable plastic straws are allowed, environmental groups advocate using compostable paper-based straws.

Iran's presence in Syria remains a red line for Israel, which has carried out dozens of attacks to thwart Iranian military entrenchment in the war-torn nation.

Tensions have risen dramatically between the two arch-enemies in recent months and following the strike, Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said that the time when Iran's enemies could "hit and run" was over.

The attack comes amid a Syrian government offensive against insurgent groups near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. It was not the first one targeted as in February an Israeli F-16 crashed in northern Israel after being hit by Syrian air defences.

Israel seized a large swathe of the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 Six-Day War and later annexed it in 1981, in a move never recognised by the global community.

"The Zionist regime tries to gain dominance over Syria after Daesh, but resistance forces and military advisers from the Islamic Republic of Iran will continue their presence alongside Syria to counter terrorism, " he added.
