Scandal-tainted Scott Pruitt quits as Donald Trump’s environmental chief

Mr Pruitt's resignation is the latest in a long list of White House departures since Mr Trump took office a year ago.

In his resignation letter, obtained by The Associated Press, Pruitt is expressing no regrets.

Like President Trump, Pruitt voiced skepticism about mainstream climate science.

Trump told reporters on Air Force One on Thursday en route to Montana that Pruitt "did an outstanding job" and resigned of his own accord.

Pruitt was also accused of having "repeatedly enlisted subordinates to help him search for housing, book personal travel and even help search for a six-figure job for his wife", the Post reported.

The president expressed confidence he would go on to do "great things".

While Pruitt arrived in Washington as part of President Trump's promised wave of outsiders hoping to shake up the Capital, Wheeler has spent years navigating the intricacies of environmental policy.

Pruitt, a former Oklahoma attorney general, has been under scrutiny for months amid reports involving questionable spending on first-class plane tickets, use of security detail, connections with lobbyists and industry groups, and use of his office for favors.

He had denied wrongdoing in the face of multiple congressional and oversight inquiries.

During his one-year tenure, Pruitt was seen by conservatives as one of President Donald Trump's most effective Cabinet members, working relentlessly to dismantle Obama-era regulations aimed at reducing pollution.

Environmental groups predict the Trump administration will continue its pattern of appointing the least likely candidate to head the agency. As Pruitt's controversies grew in April, the Union on Concerned Scientists said it would have serious concerns if Wheeler were made EPA administrator.

Meanwhile, activists argued Mr Pruitt's policies of moving to boost fossil fuel production and rollback regulations opposed by corporate interests had endangered the environment.

Trump tweets that Deputy Administrator Andrew Wheeler will assume the acting administrator position Monday.
