Montgomery County reports spike in West Nile activity

Statistical data for the number of Zika and West Nile virus cases reported by the county this year so far, is not yet available, but health officials warn, following times of heavy rain and flooding, the number of cases generally spike.

West Nile virus is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. The West Nile virus previously was found on Northumberland and Montour County. Use a repellent with DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide), permethrin, picaridin (KBR 3023), IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus [p-methane 3, 8-diol (PMD)] according to the instructions on the product label.

Consider wearing long-sleeved shirts, long trousers and socks when outdoors, particularly when mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk, or in areas known for having large numbers of mosquitoes.

Health officials recommend reducing mosquitoes around your home by removing any items that hold still water since that's where they lay their eggs.

'Strawless in Seattle': City bans plastic straws, utensils at restaurants, bars
The city made an exception for straws and utensils , since alternatives to plastic were hard to come by at the time . Though compostable plastic straws are allowed, environmental groups advocate using compostable paper-based straws.

Other precautions people can take to minimize mosquito exposure are to fix or replace all window and door screens to keep mosquitoes outside, and reduce or eliminate all standing water.

The Lake County Health Department's Mosquito Surveillance Program coordinates mosquito trapping results throughout Lake County.

Last year, 104 batches of mosquitoes and one bird tested positive.

"With two mosquito-borne viruses now active in the Coachella Valley, it is more important than ever for people to protect themselves from mosquito bites, " district spokeswoman Jill Oviatt said. People older than 50 and individuals with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe illness from West Nile virus. A pool is a group of up to 50 mosquitos of the same species; these are the first pools to test positive in the 2018 surveillance season. However, some may become ill usually three to 15 days after the bite of an infected mosquito. Twenty-eight positive West Nile samples were in The Woodlands alone.
