Fernando Hierro cuts ties with Spanish federation after World Cup exit

Hierro was named sporting director for the second time in 2017 but was unexpectedly catapulted into the role of national team coach the day before the World Cup began when Julen Lopetegui was sacked after agreeing to join Real Madrid.

Fernando Hierro has left his Spain coaching role and will not also return as the Sporting Director, Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has confirmed.

In Russia, Spain topped Group B under Hierro.

Fernando Hierro has quit his role as Spain's national team head coach following La Furia Roja's Second Round exit at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russian Federation.

"Thanks for everything, Fernando!" the statement from Spanish Football Federation's official website read in part.

"The last Spain coach has declined to return to his old job as sporting director of the federation in order to look for new horizons and new professional challenges".

UK's Brexit Secretary David Davis has resigned
Mr Davis was appointed Brexit secretary in 2016 and was responsible for negotiating the United Kingdom withdrawal from the EU. His rebellion was joined by two junior ministers, Steve Baker and Suella Braverman.

'The Federation wants to highlight the professional and human values of an extraordinary athlete who wants the best of fortunes, ' the statement added.

Spain only won one game at the World Cup, against Iran, and drew their other two group matches vs. Portugal and Morocco.

Andres Iniesta, the former Barcelona great who scored the winning goal in the 2010 World Cup final, retired from the worldwide team after the defeat to Russian Federation.

Hierro, 50, was sensationally appointed Spain coach on the eve of the tournament, after previous boss Julen Lopetegui was sacked for agreeing to take the Real Madrid job.

Former Chelsea forward Diego Costa was alleged to have clashed with Hierro before crashing out to Russian Federation during the penalty shootout.
