The departures raise the stakes for May, who secured a hard-won agreement with her deeply divided cabinet of ministers on Friday to keep the closest possible trading ties with the EU.

Analyst said Davis's resignation should make it easier for May to implement a softer Brexit, under which Britain retains a close trading relationship with the European Union, although caution over possible new challenges to her leadership remained.

Davis's late-night resignation undermined May's already fragile government. "Well done David Davis for having the principle and guts to resign".

Top EU officials said Brexit was becoming a mess for Europe following the resignations.

He said he was anxious the government's negotiating approach would "lead to further demands for concessions" from Brussels.

David Davis quits as Brexit Secretary in major blow to May
Davis and Baker, both longstanding euroskeptics, decided they couldn't support the policy, a person familiar with the matter said. On Friday, Davis and the rest of May's fractious Cabinet finally agreed on a plan for future trade ties with the EU.

However, even in that event it seems to me that the national interest requires a Secretary of State in my Department that is an enthusiastic believer in your approach, and not merely a reluctant conscript. "If the Brexit Secretary can not support them they can not be very good proposals".

Conservative lawmaker Jacob Rees-Mogg, a leader of the party's "hard Brexit" faction, compared May's plan to an egg so softly boiled that it "isn't boiled at all".

In a statement, No 10 thanked Mr Johnson for his work and said a replacement would be announced shortly.

The appointment comes after Davis resigned overnight, saying he would be unable to deliver the PM's post-Brexit trade strategy - which was approved by the cabinet on Friday - as he did not "believe" in it. Environment Secretary Michael Gove said Sunday that it did not contain everything he wanted but "I'm a realist".

The 69 year old had reportedly threatened to quit several times over a perceived lack of firmness in Britain's negotiating stance but had remained strictly loyal to the prime minister in public.
