Brendon Hartley crash mars final British Grand Prix practice

The hour long session was red flagged just 15 minutes in when a suspension failure caused Brendon Hartley to fly into the wall at the end of the Wellington Straight.

The Toro Rosso driver crashed heavily at Brooklands after front left suspension failure pitched him into a spin.

Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen was second fastest, 0.093 off the pace, with Hamilton's Mercedes team mate Valtteri Bottas third but 0.642 slower than the Briton.

Vettel completed only eight laps during the session and did not take part in the final minutes due to a "nuisance on his neck", as confirmed by Ferrari.

Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes has returned to the top of the timesheets in the final practice for the his home race, the British Grand Prix.

Red Bull finished 1.2s off the pace, Max Verstappen edging Daniel Ricciardo in the battle for fifth position, the duo separated by a mere 0.006s.

The security guard got out of the vehicle and fired a gun in the air to disperse protesters. He temporarily suspended the price increase on Saturday.

Hartley's wheel was pushed upwards and his STR13 skated across the gravel and caught some air before he slammed into the barriers on the outside of the corner.

Despite the head-on impact, Hartley was able to climb out of the auto unscathed and was cleared and released after being checked in the medical center, leaving him fit to take part in qualifying if possible.

The red flag was immediately waved on the session and there was a 14-minute delay as marshals cleared the wreckage with Hartley's vehicle being craned away.

Hartley emerged uninjured, but his auto was unable to be rebuilt in time for qualifying, forcing him to back of the grid for the Grand Prix on Sunday (Monday NZ time).

The team is reportedly looking into his teammate Pierre Gasly's vehicle to understand what went wrong ahead of the qualifier. Gasly did not return to the track after Hartley's crash.
