And when A, B and O blood types are missing from hospital shelves, patient care could be impacted. The American Red Cross is dropping the letters A, B and O from its logo.

"Imagine life without the letters A, B and O, let alone Scrabble", said Silungile Mlambo, the SANBS's chief marketing officer.

According to the Red Cross, every two seconds, someone in the US needs blood. It's not just blood: it's keeping families together.

Visit www.sanbs.org.za or call 0800 11 90 31 for more information or to find out where to volunteer as a blood donor. Those in need include: cancer patients, accident, burn, or trauma victims, newborn babies and their mothers, transplant recipients, surgery patients, chronically transfused patients suffering from sickle cell disease or thalassemia, and many more.

The app now allows donors to book appointments, access maps of all the blood drives across the country and share via personal social media platforms, and as one of the coolest features yet, it sends a special notification to Whole Blood donors when their blood has been used to help save a life - in real time.

Princess Charlotte had a great fall but Kate Middleton saved the day
The Duchess of Cambridge said that these days out with the kids are the best of her life, and they are priceless. The baby prince was also absent from the Royal Family's balcony appearance on Saturday afternoon.

Events are being held in communities across the country during National Blood Donor Week to celebrate donors and remind people to give blood now and during the summer, one of the most challenging times for Canada's blood system. "They don't realize we're relying on their blood donation", said Dotson. This is not just a Red Cross trend, but a challenge blood collection organizations face across the country and around the world. Major companies are doing the same for brands like Mastercard, State Farm, and Oreo. "However, we have seen a troubling decline in the number of new blood donors. This will inevitably cause a spike in the demand for blood transfusions", said Mlambo.

A "safe blood supply" requires a seven-day inventory of all blood types.

It's easy to donate blood.

Yet, sadly, attendance at blood donor clinics can often decrease because of vacations. Most individuals who are 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. Since roughly 20% of donors are students from high schools and colleges, the Red Cross is in desperate need. Many countries still have a shortage of donors and thus World Blood Donor Day is vital to these countries to raise awareness of blood donation and thus increase supply to save as many lives as possible.
