Lucky 13! Justify Becomes 13th Triple Crown Winner

The three-year-old colt Justify won the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, after previously winning the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, the three most prestigious horse racing events of the year. "That's his job, to protect the other horse, and it worked for them", Velazquez said. Restoring Hope, also trained by Baffert, ran interference for the champion while traveling second and deterring any threats by forcing them to go extremely wide.

May 19, 2018 - Justify, ridden by Mike Smith, wins the 143rd Preakness.

Justify's victory made Bob Baffert just the second trainer to win the Triple Crown twice. "He is a Triple Crown victor and he's undefeated", Repole said to the New York Post. Baffert then threw him right into the Grade I Santa Anita Derby, which he won by 3 lengths.

So why would Notre Dame root for Justify and a Triple Crown?

Repole did tell The Post he considers Justify a "super horse", regardless of his questions about the Belmont. Justify pulled away down the 1,097-yard stretch in front of a grandstand packed with screaming fans with only 24-1 shot Gronkowski picking up the chase down the lane.

Post time for the Belmont Stakes is 6:37 p.m. ET, coverage of the undercard races begins at 2 p.m. ET.

Other Triple Crown winners include Sir Barton (1919), War Admiral (1937), Whirlaway (1941), Count Fleet (1943), Assault (1946), Citation (1948) and Secretariat (1973).

As his Fyre Festival co-hort Ja Rule would sing, McFarland best prepare for some good "Thug Lovin'". Hulu announced in April it was producing a documentary series about the Fyre Festival.

Finishing second was Gronkowski, who came from last place to take second.

The Triple Crown victor arrived at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., on Monday for rest and relaxation.

Because he raced at 2, though, Seattle Slew is recalled as a relatively slow burn across the racing sky, while Justify has been a red-hot comet.

Coming off the historic race at the Belmont Stakes, Del Mar racetrack spokeswoman Carrie Jones told FOX 5 that Justify will be stabled at the San Diego racetrack.

Justify's romp resulted in a quarter in 23.37, a half in 48.11 and six furlongs in 1:13.21, a fairly snappy pace for a mile and half horse race.

"He has natural speed", Baffert said. "But I can see the stewards looking into this over the next couple of days".

The Belmont Stakes Day card generated an all-sources handle of $137,954,895 - the second-highest in one day New York Racing Association History behind Belmont Stakes Day in 2014.
