Friends set up fundraiser to help Cork murder victim’s family

Mikolaj Wilk, 35, died after he was attacked at his home in Maglin, Ballincollig.

Another adult female (early 30s) was present in the house at the time that the incident took place, along with two children under six years of age.

The man's injuries have been described as "very serious" while his partner's - a woman in her 30s - injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The couple were rushed to Cork University Hospital for treatment, however Mr Wilk was pronounced dead at around 5.30am.

In a press conference, Superintendent Colm O'Sullivan said Wilk had left a family behind as well as many friends living in the Polish community.

Officers investigating the incident say they are now searching for the men behind the attack. O'Sullivan said the two children were in the care of social workers.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone with information or to anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact them.

Gardai, who have launched a murder inquiry, responded to the incident at 3.17am on Sunday.

Shortly after the attack, a burnt out vehicle was found abandoned a few miles away from the house in Ballincollig, County Cork, Ireland.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled to take place later on Sunday. They are also anxious to interview anyone who spotted anything unusual or suspicious in those areas during the last three days.
