Vettel steered his Ferrari over the 2.71-mile (4.36-km) track in 1 minute, 10.764 seconds to deprive Lewis Hamilton of a record seventh pole in Montreal.

Mercedes' decision to choose the fewest number of hyper-soft tyres for this weekend out of all the teams may have contributed as neither driver had tried them until Saturday morning, but Hamilton can not blame only that as Bottas ended up on the front row.

Hamilton was unusually out of sorts on a track where he has excelled so many times and a series of mistakes left him struggling to keep up with his rivals.

"On Friday the auto balance was great into [Turn] 10".

"I'm getting really exhausted of all the questions", said the 20-year-old, who has fewer than half the points of Red Bull team-mate Daniel Ricciardo ahead of Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix.

"There are massive bumps into Turn 10". "We're laughing about it because at one point that's the only thing you've got to do". "I will never do that, because it's brought me to where I am so far". He has already surpassed the seven time champion's overall haul of career pole positions as well as claimed other minor records.

Hamilton will start from behind the front-row in Montreal for the first time in seven years.

"We have elected to start on a different strategy to our immediate competitors, starting tomorrow's race on Hypersoft tyres, and it will be interesting to see how that plays out tomorrow", said Horner.

"Our long runs were really good".

They know. "They showed a lot of effort and grit, mucked up the game quite a bit and just hit shots from all over the court ". The enigmatic quotes offer hope to disillusioned fans hoping an implosion might discontinue Golden State's inescapable reign.

"We have the pace to take the fight to Ferrari and Mercedes".

Neither Mercedes found the improvements the team was hoping for when they strapped on the hypersofts, with Hamilton taking fourth fastest and Valtteri Bottas sixth, behind Daniel Ricciardo. If the softest compound doesn't hang on, though, then Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen are waiting to pounce. I couldn't find the rhythm, I wasn't happy with the vehicle.

"From our testing, we had in Abu Dhabi [last December] particularly, that's what led us to the decisions we made and we stick with those". "There are certain circuits that will suit you more than another place and this has been one of those circuits for me", added the Briton.

"Now he (Verstappen) is in the spotlight. any small error now I think he's probably going to get a little picked apart from", Ricciardo said.

"It was just a hard session".

He added: "I get really exhausted of all the comments saying I should change my approach".

"We got pole today for a reason", said Vettel.

However, Wolff said: "The fact is this is a championship that is going to be won and lost with the tiniest of margins. And if it runs reliable, we'll do the whole weekend with it". The auto is working well and we're just missing out on top speed.
