Sebastian Vettel wins Canadian Grand Prix for 50th career victory

I wasn't really happy with the auto, we had some problems and I couldn't get the rhythm. It feels like there are no better questions out there than keep asking me about what happened in the previous weekend.

A race known for spills and mishaps was mostly uneventful, other than a crash that put local favourite Lance Stroll of Montreal out only a quarter of the way through the first lap. The Scuderia are the most successful team at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve with 11 wins but they had not had a victory here since Schumacher won in 2004.

The Ferrari driver was back at his best in Montreal, doing enough to beat the Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas and start at the front of the grid in Sunday's race, setting a best time of 1m10.764s. "I quickly saw that it was going to be hard to take pole position but you always do your best and try to get the best out of the auto".

Vettel's best lap time of one minute 10.776 seconds bested the record of 1:11.459 set past year by Mercedes ace Lewis Hamilton.

The problem did indeed seem to resolve itself, with Hamilton even managing to close up on fourth-placed Daniel Ricciardo in the closing stages of the race, although he didn't manage to make it past the Red Bull driver before the finish. The Briton has won the last three on the track that seems to suit the Mercedes auto with its heavy braking after long straightaways and tight chicanes.

"It will be interesting to see how it does in the start of the race, especially because Red Bull will start on the hypersoft".

"No big surprises. We thought that Ferrari and Mercedes were going to qualify on the Ultras". He and Ferrari executed their race to perfection, took the lead in the title race and have left Hamilton and Mercedes with much to consider before racing resumes in France in a fortnight.

As many fans predicted, Respawn's mysterious Star Wars game did make a minor appearance at the Electronic Arts press conference. Will this title recapture the lost inspiration from Visceral's canceled project? However, BioWare seems to be working on that .

Hamilton leads Vettel by 14 points in the standings after six races and will be determined not to allow him to cut substantially into that cushion. We learned a bit and I know the direction I want to go set-up wise.

"With the long straights it's hard to fight for pole position".

Kimi Raikkonen in the other Ferrari and Monaco victor Daniel Ricciardo are in the third row.

Hamilton will be eager to exact revenge over his Ferrari rival at the French Grand Prix.

"We managed to get a few laps in at the end of FP3 and I did enough to feel what the auto was like".

"We got pole today for a reason", said Vettel.

After 20-some strolls down to the Senna corner to watch the cars come through on that first lap, I can tell you there is nearly nothing like seeing them barrel down the straightaway, brake down nearly to a standstill through the chicane and then seemingly leap up and out of sight around the bend. But the Finn says that it's the race strategy that could prove the decisive factor.
