Iraq parliament votes for manual recount of May election results

Government says the explosions in Baghdad's Sadr City district occurred in a weapons depot housed within a mosque.

Police have stepped up security in the area, while no group has claimed responsibility. The council has also been asked to appoint nine judges to supervise the manual recount.

MPs say the recount is meant to "correct the result" of the vote, but exactly how long it's going to take to manually recount all 11 million votes is unclear.

The May 12 elections were the country's first parliamentary poll since 2014.

The Sairoon coalition led by Shiite leader Muqtada al-Sadr won the May 12 election with 54 seats out of 328. Abadi's bloc came in third. Along with the seven killed, at least 20 people were wounded, according to security officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Calls for a recount have been mounting since the election was held, with multiple charges of electoral fraud being bandied about, though the exact nature and mechanism of the alleged fraud is often not specified.

The move could hinder the delicate process of forming a new government, raising the prospect of further uncertainty in Iraq, and pits the government and parliament against the election commission, which is meant to be independent.

He banned high-ranking IHEC officials from travelling overseas without his approval and said criminal charges might be brought against some individuals.
