U.S. celebrity chef Chef Anthony Bourdain found dead at 61

He was found by friend and fellow chef Eric Ripert in his hotel in France where he was filming for an upcoming series of the show.

CNN confirmed Bourdain's death on Friday.

"It is with extraordinary sadness we can confirm the death of our friend and colleague, Anthony Bourdain", a spokesperson for the network said in a statement Friday morning.

Bourdain's televised adventures took him around the world, including to Toronto. Celebrities and notable figures who have recently passed awayBourdain won five Emmys for Parts Unknown and two Emmys for his earlier Travel Channel show No Reservations. "You've got all the worst architectural fads of the 20th century".

In his quest to understand a country using food as his baseline, Bourdain made a point of eschewing tasting menus for local markets, late night street meet, and home-cooked meals. Bourdain said of the carefree lifestyle he enjoyed back then. "And right now I'm really sad, because this guy did a lot for my passion and education in this industry when I was a young gun who couldn't afford to eat and see and understand everything I wanted to".

Scott Vivian was Bourdain's tour guide for the episode.

One of the most influential chefs in the world, Anthony Bourdain was a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America. Vivian told CBC Radio's Here and Now despite Bourdain's beef with Toronto's architecture, he was excited about Toronto's up-and-coming food landscape. Saul Montiel, executive chef at the Mexican restaurant Cantina Roof Top in Manhattan, called Bourdain "one of the few chefs that valued the work of Latinos in the kitchen".

Bourdain wondered out loud: "How does he even grab chopsticks with those little fingers?"

The chef hostedParts Unknown which aired on CNN. In 2015, he said he spoke to Wine and Spectator Magazine about how he'd like to be remembered.

"At the end of the day, we're all just cooks", said Vivian.

Former President Barack Obama, who appeared on an episode of "Parts Unknown", said on Twitter, "He taught us about food - but more importantly, about its ability to bring us together".

"It is a world very, very different than my own".

He talked openly about it and posted on his Twitter account.

Anthony Bourdain's death left an inimitable gap - not only in the culinary world but all across the globe too - where he advocated for the marginalised and highlighted the diversity in every cuisine.
