French Open glance: Halep vs. Stephens in French Open final

Romanian Halep's best chance came past year when she was a set and 3-0 ahead against unseeded Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, only to suffer a heartbreaking defeat.

She fought back from a set down against Maria Sharapova in 2014 only to lose a tight decider, before seeing a set and 3-0 lead disappear in a barrage of Jelena Ostapenko winners previous year.

That heartbreak, though, has been replaced by joy.

Backed by fans who loudly chanted her first name between games, Halep went ahead 3-0 in only 15 minutes with the help of only one victor.

"In the last game I didn't feel like I could breathe any more and I didn't want to repeat past year, so I did everything I could".

With his good run at Roland Garros, Del Potro is now guaranteed to return to the top four in the rankings for the first time in more than four years. "I'm really happy that I could beat a player like Muguruza". "I think that it has helped me".

In her third French Open final, after 2014 and 2017, 2018 finally brought the crown in the jewel for the nippy Romanian world No.1. It's a handsome thing, very special.

"I was dreaming for this moment since I've started to play tennis", Halep said.

Twelve months ago, while Simona Halep was crumbling to defeat in the French Open final, Sloane Stephens was off the tour, attending the wedding of a friend in Ireland.

Stephens fell to 0-7 against No. 1-ranked players during her career.

"You have been waiting for this so you better put it up in the air and show them what you got today", Stephens said.

But Stephens suddenly lost her focus to allow Halep back in the match.

A composed looking Stephens was indeed the first to break through, gaining a 3-1 advantage.

The tiebreaking ninth game of the third set essentially sealed the match, with Halep fending off three break points before claiming the lengthy battle. To Halep's dismay, she sent a backhand into the net.

"I will try my best", Halep told the crowd at Court Philippe Chatrier, "and hopefully I will be better than a year ago".

"I lost three times until now and no one died, so it will be OK", Halep said. She would right the ship, however, winning three straight games from down 4-2 and breaking Muguruza in the 10th game to seal the victory.

The momentum - and crowd, who often chanted "Simona, Simona" - was with her.

But in Rome, Halep was downhearted to have lost the semifinal to Maria Sharapova perhaps due to a sustained back injury.

Halep went all out in the first set but her bold strategy backfired badly as she hit 30 unforced errors.

Top-ranked Simona Halep has leveled at one set-all in her French Open quarterfinal against Angelique Kerber of Germany.

The job was nearly done and it became official when Halep crushed a serve on match point that drew an error.

Sloane Stephens celebrates after defeating Venus Williams in their women's singles semifinal at the 2017 US Open on September 7, 2017 in NY. However, when it's all over, Nadal will raise his arms in triumph in Paris for the 11th time and earn the championship again.
