Max Verstappen on top again in Canadian GP FP2

Max Verstappen on top again in Canadian GP FP2

Williams driver Lance Stroll of Canada pulls out of the garage during the first practice session Friday at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal.

Scorching the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve with the fastest times of the day will have that effect on a driver.

Max Verstappen has a message for Formula 1 media types.Stop telling me how to drive.Sitting 75 points behind championship leader Lewis Hamilton through six rounds of the season, Verstappen has been. "We had some problems this morning and they tried to fix it during lunch but it didn't improve".

The young Dutchman clocked the best time of the day in the afternoon session, one minute, 12.198 seconds, ahead of Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen and Red Bull team mate and Monaco Grand Prix victor Daniel Ricciardo. Then came three-time defending Montreal victor Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, and Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas. The Dutchman's 1:12.198 was more than a second quicker than he managed earlier in the day during FP1. You could see in Monaco that we have a great vehicle and it's very unfortunate that we don't have the top speed to compete all the time.

"I don't know", he said before a long pause. The Dutchman appeared irritated during Thursday's press conference, responding to one question on his recent form by saying, with a half-smile: "I'm getting really exhausted of all the questions [on the topic]". And having such good momentum at the moment I think a penalty would take a bit of wind out of our sails. The auto is working well. "So we missed some track time but we will kick in tomorrow".

Mercedes did not practice on the hypersoft tires, leaving Ricciardo wondering if he has seen their best effort. He spent most of the second practice session in the pits waiting for his team to iron out an electrical issue, and managed just 17 laps in the session.

Alonso headed Renault's Carlos Sainz, with the second McLaren of Stoffel Vandoorne and Toro Rosso Pierre Gasly completing the top 10.

Red Bull is running new Renault engines in both cars this weekend and, fortunately for Ricciardo, the problem was rectified without the need for a component change. Not the best day but we are OK. We got a few laps at the end there so I did enough to feel what the auto was like.

Stroll, in his second season with Williams, posted the 19th fastest time of 1:14.703, outpacing only his Russian teammate Sergey Sirotkin. Sauber's Marcus Ericsson also had a spin that left him facing the wrong way on the track, but he straightened out and resumed. He is hoping to build on last year's appearance at his hometown track, when as a rookie he earned the first points of his Formula One career.
