Liverpool set to complete £53m signing of Nabil Fekir from Lyon

Hughes writes that a crucial turning point for Liverpool is the fact that Fekir did not feature when France beat Italy 3-1 last weekend, prompting Aulas to realise that a "pre-World agreement just might be the best way forward for Lyon".

It appeared Liverpool would have to wait to sign Fekir after Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas said on Thursday that he did not expect the attacking midfielder to be sold before the World Cup.

Fekir will take his medical on Friday, and it is now expected that the transfer will be completed before France leave for the World Cup.

It is already Liverpool's third signing of the summer.

Liverpool are also now being linked with Stoke City's Xherdan Shaqiri and The Independent state that the Reds "are primed to seal at least one new signing in the next 24 hours". The club have also been reported as having in an interest in Roma goalkeeper Alisson Becker as well as Xherdan Shaqiri, who was relegated with Stoke at the end of last season.

Aulas' comments had cast doubt over the deal, with the notoriously hard 69-year-old telling Lyon's official website: "The record is at a standstill, there is no way forward". "The deal will certainly not be closed during the World Cup and I don't think there will be any change before the World Cup".

"He added: "[We] have not set a base price because we have not discussed this yet".
