National Weather Service places Polk County under flood watch

About four to six inches are expected for the greater Fort Lauderdale and Miami areas, with three to four inches expected for Palm Beach County. An area of low pressure near Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula could morph into a tropical storm in the coming days.

National Weather Service meteorologists said details of the weekend forecast are dependent on the track and development of would-be Alberto in the Gulf of Mexico.

Those same conditions are said to be expected in the region again on Friday. The weather service is warning beachgoers at the Jersey shore of the risk of rip currents associated with the current forecast.

Red flags warning of unsafe surf conditions are already flying along some beaches. Jordan Sawmiller of OH tells WALA-TV that he was approaching the water with caution in Gulf Shores, Alabama. "So, I don't like getting in there very far", Sawmiller said. Gov. Rick Scott issued an advisory Thursday that said it's "absolutely critical that every Florida family is fully prepared for potential impacts" during the Memorial Day weekend from the brewing storm. But Julie Hilton said people are cancelling because of the weather and room reservations are down about 20 percent. Put simply, Alberto's strongest winds and storms are well to the east of its circulation for right now, but it will likely begin to wrap up and become more centralized as it moves into the Gulf this weekend.
