Iran says USA foreign policy under influence of pressure groups

If Iran fails to comply with Washington's list of demands, the U.S. will impose the "strongest sanctions in history", Pompeo warned.

He said Paris shared USA concerns over Iran's ballistic missile "frenzy" and regional goals, but the 2015 deal was the best chance of stopping Tehran building a nuclear bomb.

Europe and the United States remain deeply divided over how to proceed after Washington's exit from the 2015 Iran nuclear accord, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said on Wednesday after back-to-back meetings with two senior US officials.

Pompeo's recent remarks came after the U.S. President Donald Trump's administration withdrew from the historic Iran nuke deal earlier this month despite the global outcry.

"They even use an erroneous term when referring to the Persian Gulf, or prevent the Iranian people from visiting their families in the USA, denying them visas", he noted.

The pact was signed in 2015 under the Obama administration and was meant to curb Iran's nuclear capabilities.

The top diplomat further said the USA has failed to turn the tide of global opinion against Iran and in favor of itself by spreading lies about the Islamic Republic.

He also voiced confidence that European countries would eventually "go along with" the US decision on Iran.

Gargash said on Twitter that "the tough strategy announced is a natural outcome of Iranian behaviour" adding that it is the right way for Tehran to understand "the futility of its incursions and expansionism".

"The current U.S. president [Donald Trump] will meet the same fate as his predecessors, Bush and the neoconservatives and Reagan, and will vanish from history", he said in the statement released on Tuesday.

The 2015 nuclear agreement, worked out by the United States, France, Germany, Britain, Russia, China and Iran, lifted sanctions on Iran in exchange for Tehran limiting its atomic program.

A senior Iranian military official, Major General Mohammad Bagheri, said Iran would not bow to US pressure to limit its military activities.

Iranian ground forces and its allied militias, including the Lebanese Hezbollah, have supported President Bashar al-Assad in Syria's seven-year-long civil war which has killed over 500,000 people.

Senior officials from the remaining parties to the accord - Britain, China, France, Germany and Russian Federation - will meet their Iranian counterpart on Friday in Vienna.
