A Baltimore County police officer who was shot Monday afternoon has died, according to WBAL.

Corp. Shawn Vinson, a spokesman for the Baltimore County Police Department, said at a press conference Monday evening that the officer encountered at least one suspect during a traffic stop involving a "suspicious vehicle" on Linwen Way in Nottingham just before 2 p.m.

"Our prayers go out to this courageous officer's family, @BACOPoliceFire, and the Baltimore County community", a portion of Gov. Hogan's tweet said.

While the governor said the officer died from a shooting, the police chief said the nature of the officer's injuries are unknown until the medical examiner does an autopsy and determines a cause of death.

One eywitness said they saw the officer "laying in the street" after approaching the vehicle, a black Jeep Wrangler.

Several people tried to keep her alive, but she was later pronounced dead at a hospital. The officer was shot in Perry Corridor, Fox 45 reported.

Kurek's neighbor, Dahle Amendt, said he had just settled into his recliner for a rest when he heard a woman's voice outside his house. It's a quiet community.

Ten officers have died in the line of duty in Baltimore County, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

Police tweeted that residents in the area of Belair and Klausmeier roads should shelter in place as officers search for an armed suspect. Parents were told not to respond to the schools, but instead to call the school administrators for more information.
