Syrian Observatory: Israeli raid in Syria killed Iranians

Israeli airstrikes struck Iranian military installations inside Syria on Thursday - its biggest coordinated assault on Syria since the 1973 Mideast war - in retaliation for an Iranian rocket barrage on Israeli positions in the occupied Golan Heights.

Iran's leaders have not yet issued a response to the Israeli accusations or the military strikes, but if confirmed it would be the first time Iranian forces have fired rockets directly at Israeli forces.

This photo provided early Thursday by the government-controlled Syrian Central Military Media, shows missiles rise into the sky as Israeli missiles hit air defense position and other military bases, in Damascus, Syria. The Quds Force, an external arm of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, carried out the launch, Israel said.

"It was commanded and ordered by (Quds Force chief General) Qassem Soleimani and it has not achieved its objective", military spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Jonathan Conricus told reporters.

Israel's military had been anticipating an attack by Iranian forces after reportedly carrying out a number of strikes on their facilities in Syria in recent months.

"We do not know yet the (Iranian) casualty count", he said.

"We will not let Iran turn Syria into a forward base against Israel", the Israeli defense minister said.

"Do we want to be vassals who obey decisions taken by the United States while clinging to the hem of their pants?"

Well Semin... Israel says Thursday's attack was its largest barrage in Syria since the start of the civil war there seven years ago and was also a clear warning to Iran. Tehran's growing clout in Syria alarms arch foe Israel, which has struck what it describes as Iranian deployments or arms transfers to Hezbollah scores of times during the conflict.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for an immediate halt to "all hostile acts" to avoid "a new conflagration" in the Middle East after Israeli forces bombed Iranian targets inside Syria.

Iran is resolutely opposed to the Jewish state and has long backed a variety of radical groups intent on its destruction.

Iran's Foreign Ministry strongly condemned Israel's attacks and called it a blatant violation of Syria's sovereignty.

Kisweh, just south of Damascus, is an area known to have numerous Syrian army bases. Lebanese-Iranian Hezbollah had support when it said it was liberating Lebanon from Israeli occupation, and Israel is supported when it targets Hezbollah for attacking the Lebanese, or participates in killing the Syrians. Israel's response was massive. Trump's hard tack against the nuclear deal, while welcomed by Israel, has stirred fears of a possible regional flare-up.

Russia has a relationship with Iran - they both back the Assad regime - but equally there is an understanding between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Russian president.

Conricus said Israel forewarned Russian Federation of its strikes on Thursday, which Syrian state media first reported hit Baath City in Quneitra, near the border. Further waves of missiles followed.

"The holy system of the Islamic Republic will step up its missile capabilities day by day so that Israel, this occupying regime, will become sleepless and the nightmare will constantly haunt it that if it does anything foolish, we will raze Tel Aviv and Haifa to the ground", he said, according to state television.

"Air defenses confronted tens of Israeli rockets and some of them reached their target and destroyed one of the radar sites", Syrian state news agency SANA reported, citing a military source. Another rocket hit an ammunition warehouse, it said.

The Israeli military said it had instructed civic authorities on the Golan Heights to ready bomb shelters, deployed new defenses and mobilized some reservist forces. There was no official confirmation.
