Citing first vice minister of foreign affairs Kim Kye Gwan, KCNA later said the fate of the unprecedented US-North Korea summit, as well as bilateral relations, "would be clear" if the United States spoke of a "Libya-style" denuclearisation for the North. Trump should do the same, thinking strategically about the motivations of all the summit's key players: North Korea, China, South Korea, Japan, and Russian Federation.

The White House didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Press secretary Sarah Sanders said earlier Wednesday that preparations for the summit were ongoing despite the cancellation threat and that Trump is "hopeful" the meeting will still take place.

"But we are no longer interested in a negotiation that will be all about driving us into a corner and making a one-sided demand for us to give up our nukes and this would force us to reconsider whether we would accept the North Korea-US summit meeting".

It also included a not-so-veiled threat to call off the June 12 summit between Kim Jong Un and President Trump. "We will see what happens, whatever is", Trump told reporters as he welcomed the president of Uzbekistan to the White House.

"This exercise, targeting us, which is being carried out across South Korea, is a flagrant challenge to the Panmunjom Declaration and an intentional military provocation running counter to the positive political development on the Korean Peninsula", Yonhap quoted KCNA as saying. It might have been infuriated over other US demands for the scrapping of chemical and biological weapons in addition to its nuclear warheads and intercontinental ballistic missiles.

"The objective of the training is to enhance the ROK-US Alliance's ability to defend the ROK and enhance inter-operability and readiness".

"They're certainly not provocative". And it looks like the North Koreans have started expressing those demands ahead of time.

They said I was a very ugly fellow. "We are operating under the idea and the notion that the president's meeting is going forward with Chairman Kim next month", Nauert said in response to a question.

She said Washington had received "no notification" of a position change by North Korea.

Thae's return to the public spotlight might be irritating North Korea.

On Tuesday, a DPRK state media article published by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) announced the cancellation of a planned inter-Korean meeting on the same day over the Max Thunder joint U.S. -ROK military exercises now being staged in South Korea.

North Korea had previously signaled flexibility about the military exercises, appearing to remove a perennial obstacle to talks between North and South Korea.
