The situation in Syria is now favorable for the political process, Russia's president said late Thursday.

"The Syrian president has made the decision to send his part of a delegation to form the Constitutional Committee that is to work on Syria's constitutional law".

"Of course, after this military success additional conditions have been created to restart a full-format political process", he said.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has paid an official visit to the Russian city of Sochi.

The post had fallen vacant following the death of the former member, senior advocate P P Rao, in September 2017. Senior Advocate PP Rao had initially been appointed as the eminent jurist in the Committee.

While on a visit to Sochi Bashar Assad told the Russian president during the meeting that stability in Syria is improving and this is opening the door for the political process.

A posting on the Syrian presidency's Facebook page said Assad and Putin also discussed economic cooperation and growing investments by Russian companies in Syria. "And of course, the next task is economic recovery and humanitarian assistance to the people who found themselves in a hard situation", the Russian president said.

Moscow has given Assad's government crucial support throughout the Syrian conflict that has killed hundreds of thousands of people, allowing Damascus to make large territorial gains in recent months against rebels. A separate anti-ISIS campaign has been conducted by the Syrian Democratic Forces, a mostly Kurdish militia established by the Pentagon as Washington grew concerned about the increasingly Islamist tendencies of CIA-backed rebels.
