A school bus with dozens of children on board has collided with a dump truck in New Jersey, killing at least one person and injuring many more.

About 10 victims were taken to St Clare's Dover Hospital and St Clare's Denville Hospital, according to communications director Patty Montgomery.

Police have said they are investigating a "serious" accident. He says he "heard a scraping sound" and the bus "toppled over". The accident happened along Interstate 80, which is about 50 miles west of New York City.

"Family members are asked to visit East Brook Middle School to await more information from school officials". "But luckily, first responders, everybody there helped get all the kids out safely from what we could see..." There was also damage to the back of the bus.

Another Twitter user shared a photo of New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy from the Propelify Innovation Festival in Hoboken on the same morning, revealing that the state official commented on the crash, "asking everyone for thoughts and prayers for the students and chaperones involved". "A lot of people were screaming and hanging from their seatbelts", he said outside Morristown Medical Center, where he had been treated for cuts and scrapes.

The driver of the dump truck is alive and possibly hospitalized, Murphy said.

Police have not released detailed information, but the Morris County Prosecutor's Office said several people were killed.

A school bus that collided with a dump truck in New Jersey had markings for a school district that had a scheduled class trip to a nearby historic site. It was fined more than $22,000 (£16,000) in 2016 for violating regulations on inspections, repairs, maintenance and post-crash drug and alcohol testing according to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. It was one of three school buses on the way to Waterloo Village in Stanhope for a field trip.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 118 people on school buses were killed in crashes from 2007-2016, the previous year for which data is available.
