Insiders on the search for a new attorney general

"Let's allow Barbara Underwood to protect New Yorkers and the interests of New York State as our attorney general not just for the next six months but for years to come".

Several potential candidates for state attorney general are opting out of what the Assembly leadership is calling a transparent process to temporarily fill the vacancy created by the abrupt departure of Eric Schneiderman in the wake of devastating sexual misconduct allegations.

"I'm not sleeping very much", she said with a laugh. Schneiderman resigned abruptly last week amid numerous reports of physical assaults against women.

Other candidates include Assemblyman Thomas Abinanti (D-Greenburgh), New York City attorney Lloyd Constantine, attorney Michael Diederich Jr., former lieutenant governor candidate Leecia Roberta Eve, attorney Nicole Gueron, former New York City Comptroller Elizabeth Holtzman, Rockland County Attorney Thomas Humbach, New York State Supreme Court Judge Doris Ling-Cohan, attorney Mina Quinto Malik, Assemblyman Daniel J.

The second and final day of the legislature's interviews with candidates for interim attorney general on Wednesday introduced a highly diverse set of candidates, some of whom argued against the appointment of acting Attorney General Barbara Underwood despite her seemingly growing political support. Schneiderman has denied the allegations. Mr. Schneiderman has stridently voiced support of women's causes, though it now appears he has little respect for women. The Democrat was running for a third term.

"We believe that we have the constitutional power and right to do this", Lentol said.

"I don't think any of us expected to be sitting here today". On May 21, the state Republican and Democratic conventions begin.

Also on Wednesday, a Republican senator and a Democratic senator called on the Legislature to appoint Underwood the interim attorney general and for the state Democratic and Republican committees to cross-endorse her for a full term in November.

"Incumbency can only take you so far", Levy said, "and this is one of those years where being appointed in this current political climate can actually become a negative".

Jones, in an interview, said he hopes the qualifications of those seeking to be the next attorney general matter more in the process than any partisan considerations.
