Govt appoints Mukul Rohatgi to Lokpal panel

The Centre informed the Supreme Court on Tuesday that it has appointed former attorney general Mukul Rohtagi to the post of "eminent jurist" on the Lokpal selection committee.

Appearing before a bench of Justices Ranjan Gogoi and R Banumathi, attorney general K K Venugopal said that this decision was taken on May 11 by a committee headed by the Prime Minister.

Rohatgi served as India's 14th Attorney General from June 2014 to June 2017.

Senior Advocate PP Rao had initially been appointed as the eminent jurist in the Committee.

Oladipo finished the season averaging more than 23 points, 5.2 rebounds and a league-leading 2.4 steals a game. Oladipo will drive the pace vehicle at the 2018 Indianapolis 500 - the 102nd installment of the race.

The post had fallen vacant following the death of the former member, senior advocate P P Rao, in September 2017.

To this end, AG Venugopal had intimated that the Selection Committee had met on April 10 to recommend the appointment of an eminent jurist to the Committee. However, the post fell vacant after Rao passed away past year. However, it stopped short of passing any directions for completing the process.

The Supreme Court was hearing a 2014 contempt petition filed by advocate Prashant Bhushan-led Common Cause, which challenged the constitutionality of the search committee rules for the appointment of the Lokpal. "Needless to say, the court would expect the said functionaries to act in the matter in a suitable manner and within an appropriate time frame", the court said and posted the matter for hearing on July 2. This stance was reiterated by the apex Court past year as well.

Non-appointment of the Lokpal has been a contentious issue.
