Next Star Wars Spinoff Announced

Next Star Wars Spinoff Announced

Surprisingly, we are at a mysterious crossroads for the Star Wars franchise.

In a recent interview with Uproxx, writer Lawrence Kasdan revealed that Daniels will instead portray a Wookiee who joins forces with Chewbacca in the spice mines of the planet Kessel (a place, fittingly, that C-3PO feared in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope). Lucasfilm already has too many projects on hand. But maybe that's good news for Obi-Wan? Just what the hell are Rian Johnson, David Benioff, and D.B. Weiss contemplating with their spinoff trilogies? It is the second in a series of planned standalone "Star Wars" movies meant to exist outside the main trilogies. So you can bet Lucasfilm is looking to diversify their roster of lead characters by letting Lando Calrissian lead the way. We should not expect that to change anytime soon.

The actual star of the latest story in the Star Wars saga (although it's not technically part of the saga) tells the story of Han Solo, the tousled haired nerf herder who made the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs, and he is played in this flick by Alden Ehrenreich. As it turns out, things got lost in translation.

"But LucasFilm has since corrected the quote, with a rep telling Gizmodo "[Kennedy] said it's something she'd like to do one day in the future". Not before another Han and Chewie movie. But another heist only makes sense for the character. Lando is the scoundrel to watch. You want to hang with that dude.

"First of all I'm dying to see a Lando film". "And I think that if there's ever another one of these, you're going to have to either kill me or Bossk will be in it".

The screenwriter has obviously been percolating some ideas in his head. But a movie focusing on Lando Calrrissian out on his own would be sublime.

There's certainly been a lot of excitement over Glover's casting as Lando, and early reviews suggest that he delivers in the role. The Verge says he's "every bit the scene-stealer the trailer promised".

Now it is faring reasonably well on Rotten Tomatoes, with an aggregated score of 73%. Yes, that's a "Fresh" rating, but it's also the lowest percentage Star Wars has received since the Disney reboot. "It would also be fun to tell the story of Han and Chewie..." .

IndieWire's Kate Erbland is sure Glover's Lando "could easily handle his own spinoff".

There would have been plenty of room in the official Star Wars canon for more Lando stories, likely set after the events of Solo. At the Cannes Film Festival, Kathleen Kennedy told Premiere France (with a hat tip to ComicBook) that yes, Lucasfilm's thinking has expanded to include the possibility of a Lando Calrissian solo movie. Donald Glover continues to be flawless. "When they called me up there, I said, 'I don't know if I'm up for a fourth Star Wars movie, ' and they said, 'Well, what if it was Han?'"
