Merkel: It is not right cancelling "nuclear deal" with Iran now

Merkel: It is not right cancelling

"Everyone in the European Union shares the view that the agreement is not flawless, but that we should remain in this agreement and conduct further negotiations with Iran on the basis of other issues such as the ballistic missile programme", Merkel said as she arrived for the summit.

"It's not right to cancel this agreement in this situation now", she said.

Germany pushed back against Washington's rejection of historic Iran nuclear deal on Wednesday, saying the accord helped world leaders deal with concerns it has with the Islamic Republic. "They should continue to have this freedom", he said.

"But what is important is that companies and especially medium-sized companies which are perhaps less exposed to other markets, American or others, can make this choice freely", Emmanuel Macron said. "We promised to take political measures that would allow our enterprises to stay in Iran", he said.

For her part, Sahra Wagenknecht, president of the opposition Left Party (Die Linke), supported Merkel's position on the JCPOA and said that 'we have demanded a more autonomous and independent policy from the United States, and we are happy that we are no longer alone on that position'.

On Wednesday, French energy group Total said it would pull out of a multibillion-dollar gas project in Iran if it couldn't secure a waiver from the USA sanctions. Tehran had repeatedly hailed the project as a symbol of the nuclear accord's success.

US President Donald Trump announced on May 8 that Washington was walking away from the JCPOA, which was reached between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council - the US, Britain, France, Russia and China - plus Germany in 2015.

"I would like our debate to reconfirm without any doubt that as long as Iran respects the provisions of the deal, the European Union will also respect it", the chairman of the gathering, Donald Tusk, said before the meeting in the Bulgarian capital Sofia.

Finnish mining technology company Outotec said USA sanctions would slow down and complicate its ties with Iran but it was too early to say if it would leave.

They are all but certain to fall short of the type of firm guarantees that the Iranian authorities have been seeking.
