Karnataka fallout: Congress to meet Goa governor Friday to protest 'double standards'

Taking cue from Karnataka example, Congress leaders of Goa made a decision to stake claim to form government in Goa where it had emerged as the single largest party in the Assembly polls held a year ago.

Declaring that he will parade his party's MLA before the Governor of Bihar, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav said that Bihar Governor should follow the precedent of his Karnataka counterpart and dissolve the Nitish Kumar government. "The rule should be equal for everyone but what we are seeing here is that rules are being bent for a single party", Leader of the opposition in Bihar assembly Tejashwi Yadav said in a tweet on Thursday.

Chodankar argued that if the Karnataka governor can invite the BJP - the single largest party - to form the government despite not having the absolute majority, the Goa governor should also have invited the Congress for the same.

"In 2017, we won 17 seats and were single largest party and continue to be but Governor chose to invite the BJP which had 13 seats".

Congress emerged as the single largest party in Goa in the last elections with 17 seats in a House of 40. "But the then Governor rubbished our claim and allowed the post-poll alliance of JD (U) and BJP to form the government", he added, terming the action of then Governor KN Tripathy "severe injustice to democracy".

Former Meghalaya CM Mukul Sangma has also sought time from the Governor of the state for a meeting on Friday.

The BJP, which got 14 seats, formed the government in alliance with the Goa Forward Party and the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), which had won three seats each.

The Congress now has 16 members in the Goa Assembly as one of its legislators Vishwajeet Rane joined the BJP a year ago.

"RJD is the largest party in the Assembly, and we (Congress) are with them. Why (was) RJD was given just twi days time to form the government but BJP was given 15 days time to prove majority?"

BJP alliance with other allies have 131 seats of the 243 assembly with them.

"I along with RJD and Congress legislators would meet the governor at 1pm on Friday and stake claim to form the government in Bihar".

When pointed out that the Congress needs support of at least 21 legislators to stake claim in Goa, he said that once the governor swears in the Congress chief minister, he will be able to prove his majority on the floor of the House.

Urging other non-NDA parties to unite, the former Deputy Chief Minister said that if not stopped now, the team of Amit Shah (BJP President) would pull the same fraud in upcoming elections in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Back in Karnataka which prompted these moves, Congress and JD (S) had collected their MLAs at Eagleton Resort to keep their flock together.

Kavlekar said that in the absence of the chief minister in the state for the last two months, there is no governance in place. "The crisis of one state can not also be compared to that of another", said deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi of BJP.
