House Speaker Ryan seeks to head off Republican revolt on immigration

Carlos Curbelo (R-FL) and Jeff Denham (R-CA) are sick and exhausted of waiting for leaders refusing to move on a fix for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

They want to join forces with Democrats to pull off the rare procedural trick in defiance of leadership.

CLF's new, more targeted structure also overshadows that of its Democratic rival, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi's House Majority PAC, which has no field locations.

Vaughan says supporters of the discharge petition are only a few Republican votes short of the number they need.

Rep. Bill Flores paraphrased the speaker as telling Republicans to "quit messing around with the discharge petition" and that it's "not a path to success".

U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan on Wednesday warned a small group of his fellow Republicans against forcing a floor debate on four separate bills that would protect young illegal immigrants from deportation, saying doing so would be a "big mistake".

But that's not how many centrist GOP members see it - especially those from swing districts facing tough reelection battles this fall.

And some other GOP members are simply fed up.

The CLF is created to help Republicans get elected to the House and has brought in $71 million in contributions during the current midterm elections cycle, Politico reported.

That Denham is breaking with his close friend and ally McCarthy is particularly notable.

Chief House GOP vote counter Steve Scalise tells reporters the leaders are "working hard" to keep the moderates' effort from succeeding. That wouldn't happen until early June at the earliest. Party leaders have unsuccessfully sought such a compromise for months.

If 25 GOP House members sign on, a "discharge petition" would allow a potentially bad amnesty bill to be passed, which otherwise would never even make it to the floor.

"A national message about where our party is [on DACA] is still, I believe, wanting", he said. "If we do the same BS, cookie-cutter ads, we're going to lose".
